Why not a component of this for the Mediterranean?

"L'Union méditerranéenne" de Nicolas Sarkozy est morte" - Le Monde.fr

In many ways, this is a disappointment....that the focus is changing from one very much centered in the Mediterranean to one that resumes the stance of being a loose appendage to the European Union. The Mediterranean deserves better than that and perhaps other institutions - including the MMC - will offer opportunities to do what SARKOZY & Co. is not going to do, apparently.

These are quite impressive numbers for French newspapers, showing the country's largest circulation newspaper, Ouest-France, up over 1% for the year, and smaller, national papers like Le Figaro, gaining by similar percentages. The International Herald Tribune dropped more than 1% to under 25,000 daily circulation in France.

Another excellent opportunity.

"Bourse universitaire pour les journalistes du Moyen-Orient" - Babelmed

This looks to be an excellent program.

"Manifestation du Hamas contre une caricature de Mahomet" - Le Monde.fr

It is highly unfortunate that this has been transformed from a clear principle of freedom of expression into a religious cause. Religions should know in the strength of their beliefs that they can survive any criticism. Restricting expression, however, prevents the survival of competing ideas.

If this is true, what a depressing development this is. Surely, women and men of good intention and open minds can avoid the trampling of freedom of expression and, in the process, fully respect all religions. A global - or Mediterranean - system of freedom of expression can only succeeed when each of us is able to say whatever we wish and each of us is able to pursue any or no religion of our individual choosing. Is that not a common platform to which we need to work harder to build among us?

Clean Equity Monaco 2008 Conference

While this is not a Mediterranean-oriented event, it does include the Mediterranean, of course, by being global. More important for the MMC, it goes to the heart of one of the crucial subjects that the MMC hopes to address -- the Mediterranean and the environment and how good a job are we all doing to preserve and enhance that environment?

"Nicolas Sarkozy porte plainte contre le site nouvelobs.com" - LeMonde.fr

I wonder if SARKOZY realizes how silly he looks filing a second lawsuit about what somebody else had to say about him. It is bad public policy and surely makes him look either paper-thin-skinned or ultra-vindictive.

"No tote bag for President Bush" - Los Angeles Times

This comes at a time when France is proposing to bar public television from selling any advertising. The model of "public" television, after all these years, remains in great flux. Technology is increasing the pressure and public policy is not taking shape very naturally. There are too many open questions about what we expect on our television sets anywhere in the world that comes through some sort of government entity, or as the direct result of action (financing, etc) by some government entity.
